Sarah is a slave. Her name, during the day, is negro. She is not a rebellious slave, she does not speak up and let her opinion be made whether she is punished for it or not. She is quiet. She does what she is told, though they only tell her what to do after calling out to her by this daytime name of hers. She speaks only when spoken to and even then very little and very politely. And yet, even with so little speaking, she manages to effect the son of her master very much. At first he acknowledges his attraction to her as, simply, curiosity as to what goes on in the mind of a negro. Eventually, though, it becomes less of curiosity and more of affection. It should not be so. It cannot be so.
And yet it is so.
